How to Remain Calm During Any Argument or Conflict Situation, Backed by Science.

Every now and then, we get into an argument with someone, whether it’s a close friend or our partner. Arguments are totally normal if they don’t escalate – the most important thing everyone needs to remember is to stay calm. Since we can’t control the emotions of others, that responsibility falls on us. Not keeping a cool head when arguing about anything with anyone can cause matters to escalate which may have catastrophic consequences. And, although we can’t control our hormones (who are largely in control of our emotions), there are several ways which can calm the storm and help us overcome these situations easier.

Listen to Others

Communication is vital if you want to avoid misunderstandings. Instead of talking all the time, listen to others during an argument. It will help you avoid jumping to conclusions and find a middle ground that will help you and the person you’ve been arguing with come to a peaceful resolution.

Take a Breather

If you suddenly find yourself arguing with someone, just take a pause and breathe deep. This will calm down your parasympathetic nervous system and prevent escalation. Everything should be much cleaner and easier to deal with when your mind is not racing and jumping to conclusions.

Keep Your Voice Down

Keeping your voice down is absolutely crucial when arguing. If you yell and scream at others, you’ll appear much more aggressive and enrage them as well. Just speak with a lower voice and the whole thing should go more smoothly.

Be Honest

Being honest and staying true to yourself will prevent petty arguments from taking place. Instead of fighting later, try to talk about any problem you might have with anyone as soon as you notice it – it will pay off big in the future.

Be Assertive

Whenever you’re in the middle of an argument, don’t let others stomp on you. Stay assertive in order to come to a conclusion, but remember not to be aggressive or dwell on something from the past – it’s the wrong move.

Avoid Being Harmful

Criticizing the character and contempt of others, playing the victim and shutting others out are 4 harmful behaviors that can damage your relationships beyond repair. Physical and emotional abuse should never be tolerated, no matter if it comes from you or others.

Agree to Disagree

Sometimes, it’s just not possible to resolve an argument. In this case, it’s best to agree to disagree. Sure, it will leave things in limbo, but it will also give you some time to think about things and possibly find a solution.
